Who Is Suitable for Gum Lifting? Gum lifting is suitable for individuals whose gums at the eruption site of the front teeth are asymmetrical. To achieve a more aesthetically pleasing smile, the gum is lifted in the upper jaw where it is lower and lowered in the lower jaw where it is higher, creating symmetry. The gingiva at the tooth eruption site consists of free and attached gingiva.
The free gingiva should have a minimum height of 2mm. Therefore, gum lifting is feasible for those with more than 2mm of free gingiva. Neglecting this can lead to periodontal diseases in the future. If the free gingiva is 2mm or less, crown lengthening surgery is required. Detailed information about crown lengthening is provided in a separate article.
Two methods are used for gum lifting:
1. Using a Surgical Blade: This method employs a special surgical blade. Due to the inability to control bleeding, it is not ideal, as composite veneer or laminate application must be postponed until the gums heal in subsequent sessions.
2. Using Modern Equipment: This method utilizes a special gum lift device or a laser. The patient’s gums will not bleed, and veneers can be applied in the same session. At Viva Dental Studio, we use the second method, which saves time and costs for patients.
