Crown lengthening surgery is used when a gum lift is not feasible. The gum at the tooth eruption site consists of free and attached gingiva. The free gingiva should be at least 2mm in height. If it exceeds 2mm, a gum lift can correct the symmetry and enhance the smile. If it is 2mm or less, surgery is needed to retract the gum, remove the bone at the eruption site, and then excise and suture the gum to achieve a pleasing smile. This procedure is known as crown lengthening. This surgery is not purely cosmetic; it is also necessary to access decay below the gum line. Post-surgery recovery takes about three weeks, after which other cosmetic treatments, like composite veneers or laminates, can be applied.<\/p>\n
